Captain's Report 2008

2008 has been a challenging year for the economy, the club and for myself personally. As a club we had a few ups and downs but have had some successes to celebrate.

Captain's Drive In was great day with over 90 entries and the course set to US Open Standard. The Men's section was won by Gerry Egan with Dave Wilmot coming in as Runner up and Dennis Wicks in third. The Shire Bowl was held at Sundridge Park Golf Course. Both courses were in excellent shape and was won by Gerry Egan with Colin Tait coming in second.

In the Daily Mail Foursomes competition, we continued the tradition of Captain and Vice representing the club. We managed to make it to the third round and lost to West Byfleet who were represented by a player who had once beaten Nick Price to win the Zimbabwean Open. We lost in the first round of the Mail on Sunday to Woodlands Golf Club.

We beat Belheus Park in the first round of the Clapham Cup and lost in the second round to Hainault Forest.

We retained the Lubbock Cup after loosing the first round at Chelsfield Lakes 4- 2, we came back on home soil to win 5-1 and keep the cup. We also won the Mayor's match and Lullingstone Challenge. We narrowly missed qualification by one stroke in the gross competition and came second in the team event of the Bourne Vannick NAPGC qualifier.

John Jones - 2008 Open Winner In the Men's section of the Festival John Jones (left) was the A division winner and Andy Brzozowski took the Runners up spot. The B Division was won by Alistair Berry with Trevor Glaum coming in second.

The Penfold inter club league continued this year and proved to be a struggle. We finished 5th with 10 points after almost winning the Championship last year. We did not fare very well in the Championship Final at Lullingstone. Thanks to everyone who participated and in particular Ian Turner for Captaining and organising the matches.

Unfortunately due to my wife's illness I missed the Captain's Day and by all accounts missed a really good day. My thanks to all the Captain's from the other section and Jim Colleary for filling in for me. Winners of the A and B Divisions were Noel Grace and Bill Gladding with Dave Francis and Peter Refell runners up in their respective divisions.

I also missed out on the Scratch Cup and this was won by Chris Savage with Cliff Lowles taking the runners up spot.

The start of the shotgun was shrouded in mist so not everyone saw the fireworks going off to start the event and we almost had a tree fall on us on the 10th hole but a good time was had by all, congratulations to the winners Ian Turner and Dave Francis. The hampers were excellent again so thank you to the ladies for organising them.

I would like to thank both the committee and the members of High Elms for their support and backing over the past year and in particular Barry Butler who has worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of all the competitions.

Finally, I would like to thank Jim for his support over the past year and wish him all the best for the future as he takes up his role as Captain of High Elms Golf Club, 2009.
