Newsletter - April 2010

Not a great start to the season with the Pearson team sadly losing all its matches (home and away to Sidcup, Shooters Hill and Rochester & Cobham), but the weather did not help. It is a pity this prestigious competition has to start in the middle of winter but it's the only way it can all be done in time for the finals in the summer.

But better news in the Daily Mail Foursomes with Doreen Shaw and Dorothy Featherstone defeating Park Wood away by 2 & 1 in the first round. They will play Redlibbets at home in the next round on April 17th.

In Kent competitions, Ann Brown and Jean Dignam (in the Coombe Cup) had a bye in the preliminary round when one of their opponents from Rochester & Cobham had to go into hospital and so they were unable to play. They will play Canterbury away in the first round. In the Tappin Trophy, the team of Chris Watmough, Lynn Banner and Pam Richards will play Nizels at home in the first round. We are lucky enough to have a bye into the second round of the mixed foursomes Captains' Cup where we will play Rochester & Cobham at home. The individual Three Feathers competition is up and running as well. There were first round defeats for Ann Brown, Pauline Weeks and Maggie Glaum but byes into the second round for Doreen Shaw, Jean Dignam, Dawn Bell and Lesley Barton.

Two qualifiers have been played with our Captain, Sandra Vaughan winning through to the final of the Cecil Leitch 5-Club competition (organised by the Kent County Playing Fields Association) which will be staged at Wrotham Heath in June and the pairing of Lynn Banner & Jean Etheridge winning the Peugeot Coronation Foursomes qualifier, organised by the LGU, although they felt that the choice of Romford or Brighton was just too far to go to play in the Regional Final.

The first of the season's friendly matches was played in atrocious conditions away at Farleigh Court (a very exposed course, for those who don't know it) and ended with a "friendly" 2-2 result after all agreeing to finish after just 9 holes.

Congratulations to Pam Richards for winning the ladies' competition at the Captains' Drive-In with 32 Stableford points from Sharon Assemakis with 30 points. A total of seven ladies turned out to support this year's Lady Captain, Sandra Vaughan, and we all wish her the best of luck in her year.

All club competition results are now posted on the HowDidIDo website (www.howdidido.co.uk), as are the updated handicaps which show both Active and Inactive handicaps. Remember you must have an Active handicap to win a Club competition, although you can play in order to make your handicap. If you have any queries about handicaps, contact Dawn Bell, the Handicap Secretary, on 01689 817722 (evenings).
