The Christmas Shotgun 17th December 2006

Lee setting up rocket The Christmas Shotgun 2006, some 80 players gathered at circa 8 am all in a very festive mood, many dressed in Santa hats and other suitable garb for the occasion. Everyone signed in and moved off to their respective starting holes. We had thought about what we might signal the start with,a shotgun (sawn off), a fog horn and others, but we decided it would be much more fun to let off an enormous rocket banger, there would then definitely be no question whether the players heard the starting signal. Our in house pyrotechnic expert, Lee McCready (soon to be Captain) was assigned the job of finding such an animal. Sure enough he turned up with an extra large rocket and launcher that was planted outside the Clubhouse. So exited was he that ignoring the time he lit the fuse 4 minutes early and a ginormouse explosion rocked the whole of High Elms, Farnborough Village and Down at 8.26 am.

Rocket ready to go The weather for our Shotgun was kind and the sun shone unlike the wet weather that had preceded it. Considering the dreadful weather we had had up to that point, the course was in fairly good condition for the time of year, for which I would like to thank Michael Weekes and his team.

Some really good scores were returned with Lester Mitchell taking first position in the Mens' Competition on countback on 39 points against Danny Marsham who came second. There then came no less than 4 people on 38 points with Kevin Webber coming out 3rd on countback, then Matt Wawrzewski at 4th, James Tyler at 5th place and finally Bradley Edge in 6th place. Noel Grace took longest drive and Dave Francis nearest the pin.

On the Ladies side again there was a tie on 32 points with Olivia O'Shiel winning on countback from Maggie Glaum in 2nd place. Liz Martinez-Gray took longest drive and Chris Long nearest the pin.

Rocket exploding We asked Micky Gray to give us some background music this year in the bar and were able to use his radio mike very effectively for the prize giving delaying the dinner until 3.30pm, which allowed everyone to socialise a little before going into the Christmas Lunch. This seemed to work well for everyone and I would like to thank Micky Gray for efforts on the day.

The lunch was great fun to round off a very enjoyable day. I would like to thank Chris Crabtree and his team for all their efforts. A great thank you also must go to Peter and Steve as always in the Proshop who helped us prepare for the day, did all the cards for us and checked them when they came in apart from running the swindle.

Between the raffle and the collection through the swindle we raised, once all the dust had settled, £228.76 for the Captains Charity, the Chartwell Unit for Cancer Care in Bromley, taking the total raised so far to just over £2500. Well done everyone on a great turnout, some splendid performances and for your generosity.

I take this opportunity to thank all the committee members for their support this year in particular Lee McCready and Liz Martinez-Gray. I have had a lot of fun during 2006 helping our members enjoy their golf at High Elms and I wish you all the very best of luck in 2007. I particularly wish Lee every success when he takes over as Captain very shortly and hope he enjoys it as much as I have done. One last big thank you and that is to my good lady who made a fantastic job of the Hampers for the Shotgun and for her support during the 2006 season.
