Captains' Drive-In 2007

Thanks on behalf of myself, Jean Dignum and Gareth Holvey to all those who took part in the 2007 Captain's Drive In on Sunday 25th March.

The day was a great success with some 80+ members taking part which resulted in over £150 being raised for this years Captain's charity, the Special Care Baby Unit at Farnborough Hospital.

The weather held out and although a bit blustery first thing, the wind dropped just after my attempt at longest drive, leaving it free to be snapped up later in the day!

The course is coming back after an extremely wet few months, with record levels of rainfall in December, January and February. This meant that unfortunately we had to play off of the mats and I was pleased to see as I drove around that none of you let it deter you from enjoying the day (although I did get some odd looks turning up in a buggy, suited and booted)!

The event itself was split into two groups, ladies and men's with Nicky Watt winning the ladies event with 35 points, and Sarah Lane coming a close second with 34. The longest drive was on the 10th hole and won by last years Lady Captain, Liz Martinez-Gray and Christine Long hit the 5th to win nearest the pin.

The men's event was closely contested with first place going to Jim Colleary with 42 points, Dave Williams in second place with 40 points and Yan Wawrzewski came in third with 40 points.

Nearest the pin on 16 was won by Les Head and Chris Savage out drove me (his year is going to be hell!!!!) to win the longest drive on 9. However, what would the Drive In be without some form of contention? Chris was subsequently out driven by Ben Gillet who turned out to be not eligible for the competition, but I was pleased to present him with a bottle of wine for his efforts.

I was also pleased to put up a Best Gross Score prize and congratulations to Matt Wawrzewski who won with an excellent gross of 74. He was closely contested by James Tyler with 75 who collected the prize on behalf of Matt on the day.

On a final note, these events are put together by people who willingly donate their spare time to ensure you get as much out of your membership at High Elms as possible and my thanks go to all those who helped make this years Drive In a success. In particular I would like to thank Steve and Pete in the Pro-Shop for the continued support in organising and managing such event

I would also like to thank Alistair Berry, Mark Payne, Andy Assemakis, Jean Etheridge and Alistair McGregor for their help in getting you all off the tee on time. I hope they all enjoyed their wine.

And finally, thanks to you all for turning out. Without your support as members myself, Jean and Gareth would have made a very lonely 3 ball (although we would have won a prize!!).

Thank you.
